As early as May 2012, The Los Angeles Times was sounding Facebook's FB death knell among some teens, who were turning their attention to outlets like Tumblr, the Facebook-owned Instagram and mobile messaging apps like Kik and WhatsApp.
"Messaging apps cater to interactions between a core group of connections. So, the theory goes, users are likely to interact with them frequently," Fast Company noted earlier this year. The same article observed that Kik was now handling more than 2 billion interactions a week.
For a multitude of reasons, ranging from prying parents to boredom with ads and high school drama, teens are increasingly looking to a new generation of social networks where exchanging messages and media is easier and more comfortable.
