Cannabis Tax Map: See How States Are Cashing In

The U.S. Census Bureau has pulled back the curtain on an interactive map that spotlights the growing role of cannabis tax revenues across states. This online tool, which provides a vivid picture of the financial weight legal cannabis sales are bringing to public coffers, serves as an evidence-based wake-up call for states that have not yet legalized.

In Oregon, for instance, nearly 5% of what the state made during recent time periods came from legal cannabis. And it’s not alone.

Michigan, Illinois, Alaska, and Colorado have also seen a steady rise in their revenue streams, with the plant accounting for at least 1% of their entire state income.

This map, fed with data from 2021 to 2023, is not just about numbers and graphs, it is a powerful tool for those pushing legalization and for those wanting to explore the financial landscape shaped by cannabis. As referenced in Marijuana Moment, although methodological adjustments are still needed, the publication of this map is another testament to the shift in the federal government’s strategy toward cannabis and its interest in the benefits that legal regulation of the industry provides.

Digging deeper into the map, Illinois data shows that by the end of fiscal year 2023, the legal marijuana industry had amassed a whopping $451.9 million, outshining even the state’s alcohol tax collection once again. In fiscal year 2022, both Colorado and Washington saw higher tax revenues from legal cannabis sales as compared to those from alcohol or cigarettes, highlighting the growing significance of cannabis in state financial landscapes.

The Census Bureau’s interactive map tells a tale of unrealized potential and economic opportunity and reflects the emerging role of cannabis in fostering economic growth and enhancing public services.

This data unveils cannabis's present, evolving from a controversial subject to a key player in boosting state finances and influencing drug policy reform.
