US Voters In Favor Of Border Wall Construction, Supporting Ukraine Latest Poll Shows

Recent poll data shows a majority of American voters favor the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico.

What Happened: A report by The Hill on Tuesday revealed that a new poll from Quinnipiac University found that 52% of voters support the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border. This comes after the Biden administration decided to waive 26 federal laws to enable border wall construction in Texas.

However, the data also showed 44% of voters oppose the construction. The issue has highlighted a clear political divide, with 91% of Republican voters in favor of the wall and 78% of Democrats against it. Independent voters are almost equally divided, with 51% supporting and 46% opposing.

"Build the Wall, the rallying cry that was vilified and shot down during the Trump administration makes a comeback, buoyed by Republican voters and no doubt resuscitated by an unresolved border crisis," stated Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac University.

The poll also found that 65% of voters think that U.S. supporting Ukraine is in the national interest. 87% of the surveyed Democrats favored U.S. support for the Eastern European country, while 8% did not. In contrast, Republican voters were more divided and 49% said that supporting Ukraine was in the national interest, while 44% said it was not.

The poll, conducted with 1,737 adults from October 12 to 16, also discovered that 55% of voters view the number of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. as a crisis. Additionally, 31% said they would welcome migrants in their community, but 37% believe their community does not have the resources to accommodate them.

Why It Matters: The Biden administration’s decision to bypass federal laws and continue the border wall construction in South Texas has been a contentious issue, leading to divided public opinion. This was the first instance of such extensive use of executive power, reminiscent of the Trump era, as reported by Benzinga.

Starr County in Texas, a high-activity Border Patrol sector, has experienced a high number of illegal entries, triggering the urgent need for physical barriers and roads. In contrast, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) criticized President Biden’s decision as “window dressing” amid the ongoing migrant crisis, expressing doubts over the administration’s commitment to resolving the immigration issue, according to this Benzinga report.
