Amazon Touts 10K 'Super Cool' Electric Delivery Vans On US Roads

Major e-commerce company Amazon.com Inc AMZN said on Tuesday that it has over 10,000 of Rivian Automotive Inc‘s RIVN electric delivery vans (EDV) driving round U.S..

What Happened: “You know those super cool Amazon vans you see in the neighborhood? The custom zero-emission vans from Rivian? We’ve now got more than 10,000 of them in the U.S., and expanded internationally earlier this year,” Amazon wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The post was adjoined by pictures of the van wrapped to celebrate the 10k landmark.

Amazon intends to have 100,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet by 2030 and started rolling out the vans in Europe earlier this year in July.

Why It Matters: Amazon placed an order for 100,000 EDVs from Rivian in 2019. As per the initial contract, Rivian can deliver solely to Amazon for four years after initial deliveries. The California-based EV maker started delivering to Amazon in 2022.

During the company's second-quarter earnings call, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said that the company is working closely with Amazon for the permit to sell these vans to buyers other than Amazon sooner than was originally contemplated in the contract.
