Are You Part Of The 25% Burned Out Workers?

We’ve all been there… the mornings you dread powering up your laptop to begin another working day… checking an inbox that seems to ping with a new email every 30 seconds.

But what if these feelings seem so overwhelming that even logging off in the evening doesn’t help and you constantly find yourself irritable and withdrawn?

If the above feels familiar, you’re part of the 25% of workers suffering from burnout

What to look out for

According to a recent global study by McKinsey, burnout has become increasingly prevalent in the workplace and despite employers trying to tackle the issue via access to mental healthcare and wellbeing benefits including yoga classes, the symptoms prevail.

Sometimes burnout can be hard to identify and you might pass it off as normal stress.

However, McKinsey’s study highlights that burnout is typified by four core symptoms: exhaustion, mental distancing, cognitive impairment, and emotional impairment.

It’s also common for those suffering from burnout to feel anxious or depressed, and if you’re a woman it’s even more likely that you’re suffering from burnout (a 2022 Women in the Workplace report highlighted that the burnout gap between women and men is double what it was in 2021).

Next steps

Once you’ve identified that you’re suffering from burnout, there are a couple of things you can do to try and lighten your mental load.

For starters, identify if a toxic culture exists in your workplace and decide if you really want to be part of a company that allows this kind of behavior.

Examples of toxic workplace culture include toxic resilience aka prioritizing your work over personal needs, unhealthy competition between colleagues that fosters a hostile working environment or a blame culture where every mistake is scrutinized and accounted for instead of moving forward.

If workplace culture isn’t the problem, perhaps a lack of flexibility is something you can address. Would working remotely for all or part of the week lighten your load?

It’s worth exploring this with your manager, especially if you have responsibilities at home that require you to be at home more often.

As the adage goes, sometimes a change is as good as a rest and often, the only way to completely reset is a fresh start.
