Trump's 'Fishing Expedition': Prosecutors Challenge Subpoena For Jan 6 Committee Records

Federal prosecutors in Donald Trump‘s election interference case are pushing back against his efforts to subpoena House records related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot investigation. They label these efforts as a “fishing expedition”.

As NBC News reported, attorneys for the special counsel Jack Smith‘s office requested the court to reject Trump's motion which seeks archived materials from the investigation.

They argued that the government had already provided the defendant with the Select Committee records that were identified with any specificity. The motion by Trump, according to them, is completely unnecessary.

Earlier this month, Trump’s lawyers expressed their intention to subpoena the Committee on House Administration and other entities. They were responsible for preserving the records transferred by the former House Jan. 6 committee.

The defense team proposed seven subpoenas, including one for former House Jan. 6 committee chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.). They contend there are “certain missing records” that could be relevant to Trump’s defense in the election interference case. The trial is set for March.
