The Joe Biden administration could disclose a crucial executive order focused on artificial intelligence on Monday, reported Reuters, based on several media reports. This order is expected to include key provisions around AI use and immigration barriers for highly skilled workers.
What Happened: The executive order is slated to stipulate that advanced AI models undergo assessments “before they can be used by federal workers.” The order also aims to tackle immigration hurdles for highly skilled workers, thus strengthening the technological competitiveness of the U.S.
The news was first brought to light by The Washington Post and later confirmed by Axios. The latter cited an invitation to a White House event scheduled for Monday afternoon, coupled with details from several anonymous sources, to corroborate the imminent announcement.
Why It Matters: This possible executive order comes on the heels of the EU’s recent proposal to regulate AI.
Previously, it was reported that the EU aims to introduce a unique three-tiered system for classifying and controlling AI technologies, potentially becoming the first Western government to enforce such a system.
Known as the AI Act, this proposed legislation would dictate that AI systems, such as those used for predicting crime or sorting job applications, must undergo risk assessments.
This development could be a precursor to the steps being taken by the U.S. in the realm of AI regulation.
