Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an Independent presidential candidate, would legalize cannabis and place a federal tax on it that is designated specifically for drug treatment and rehabilitation.
In a Thursday post on X (previously Twitter), Kennedy said “Legalizing marijuana won’t just get people out of jail and back to work — it can help solve America’s drug addiction problem.” He also shared a video from September when he was asked about his stance on cannabis, during an appearance on C-SPAN's Washington Journal.
“I think the best solution is to legalize it, making possible for the cannabis distributors to actually bank their profits and their revenues, and not force them to keep them under mattresses which encourages more crime,” Kennedy pointed out. “And tax it robustly so that we can pay for the addiction treatment for our children.”

When activist and lawyer Kennedy announced his campaign for 2024 back in April, he was a Democratic candidate. Then in October, he declared the Democratic party corrupt, and being upset that he could not face off against Biden in debates, Kennedy announced that he would run as a third-party candidate.
According to a recent poll from Quinnipiac University, in a hypothetical three-way race against President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Kennedy could garner 22% support, writes Politico. This means that Kennedy’s candidacy poses a threat of siphoning just enough votes from either Biden or Trump.
