Micron Technology to Forge with Advanced AI Chips in Taiwan and Japan

U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology, Inc MU tapped Taiwan and Japan to make advanced AI memory chips.

Taiwan will be the first location to make Micron's next generation 1-gamma node dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), the company's first generation of memory chips that will leverage extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, in 2025, Nikkei Asia cites Donghui Liu, head of Micron Taiwan.

The company would later expand production to Japan.

Taiwan and Japan play vital roles in producing Micron's most advanced DRAM memory and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, per Naga Chandrasekaran, said Micron's senior vice president of technology development.

Advanced DRAM and HBM chips enable powerful generative AI computing applications like ChatGPT and Bard.

Meanwhile, China's commerce minister welcomed the chipmaker to consolidate its foothold in the Chinese market months after imposing technological restrictions on the company following the U.S.'s semiconductor embargo on its Asian counterpart.

In 2023, the Japanese government overhauled its chip strategy to triple sales of domestically produced semiconductors to over 15 trillion yen ($108 billion) by 2030.

Price Action: MU shares traded lower by 0.11% at $72.50 on the last check Monday.
