Medical Marijuana Program Expands Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

During the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Israel's Ministry of Health reported a significant increase in its medical marijuana program.

In October, patient enrollment in the medical cannabis registry increased by 2,202 individuals, double the average monthly growth. According to Marijuana Moment, this increase is particularly notable for patients seeking relief from PTSD and pain. Israel now has a record number of registered medical cannabis patients, leading to an increase in prescribed marijuana by weight.

In October, the country saw a record monthly total of 5,173 kilograms of specified products, indicating the largest monthly increase in the system. Patient enrollment by qualifying condition reflects the impact of wartime stressors, with PTSD prescriptions increasing. Chronic pain remains a leading condition, comprising the majority of new enrollees, while around 400 patients registered for unspecified conditions in October.

  • The age distribution of medical marijuana patients in Israel is diverse, with nearly 45 percent falling within the 21 to 45 age group.
  • Another 34 percent are aged 46 to 65, and roughly 18 percent are 65 or older.
  • Additionally, a small fraction of patients under 20 primarily consists of children with epilepsy or autism.

To address concerns about potential marijuana shortages, Israel extended medical cannabis prescriptions for three additional months following the October 7 Hamas attack.

Upcoming changes are expected next month to make medical marijuana more accessible, with patients able to obtain it through a prescription from any doctor. At the moment, prospective patients need a special license, either from a certified cannabis doctor or by applying to the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, BYND Cannasoft Enterprises Inc. BCAN announced a new plan of work that focuses on its proprietary CRM platform to help meet the increased demand for medical cannabis in Israel.
