Ryan Reynolds And Rob McElhenney Lost $12 Million On Their Wrexham Football Club Investment – Reynolds Responds: 'I'm Gonna Go Throw Up'

In the Oct. 31 episode of their popular Hulu docuseries "Welcome to Wrexham," Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney received some unexpected financial news regarding their ownership of Wrexham Association Football Club (AFC). The duo sat down with Wrexham AFC Executive Director Humphrey Ker, who revealed that their venture had incurred significant losses since they acquired the Welsh football team.

Although the exact figure remained undisclosed, Reynolds, 47, didn’t hesitate to inquire, asking Ker to “quantify loads for us” during the episode. It was adviser to the board Shaun Harvey who finally shed light on the situation, stating that the losses amounted to an estimated £10 million, roughly equivalent to $12 million at the time of filming.

Don’t Miss:

Reynolds’ immediate reaction was candid and relatable as he said, “I'm gonna go throw up.” However, the discussion didn’t end there. Harvey offered a glimmer of hope, advising the owners to pursue advancement to a higher league as a potential solution to their financial challenges.

This advice materialized for Wrexham AFC in April when the team secured a promotion to the English Football League. Harvey emphasized the global appeal they had cultivated and how it would offset additional costs, with the prospect of increased sponsorship revenue upon promotion.

Before this successful promotion, Wrexham AFC languished in the fifth division of English football since 2008, marking a significant departure from their 87-year-long history of competing in the Football League. Their victory over Boreham Wood Football Club in April was a momentous occasion, leading to an enthusiastic celebration on the field, with Reynolds and McElhenney sharing a heartfelt hug.

Trending:

A video shared by actor Paul Rudd captured McElhenney’s tearful reaction to the win and emotions of the moment. Reynolds also took to social media to express his elation, posting, “Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass.” McElhenney attributed his tears to “smoke getting into my eyes.”

Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer said the team’s owners are passionate, genuine and dedicated and highlighted their commitment to the club and the community. Palmer praised their love for the town, the community, the football club and the players, citing their unwavering support.

Although Reynolds is best known for his acting career, has also achieved great success as an entrepreneur. His business ventures have cumulatively sold for over $2 billion in less than four years, illustrating his proficiency beyond the entertainment industry.

Particularly noteworthy is his involvement with Mint Mobile, a company he partly owned and helped grow. Reynolds held a 25% stake in Mint Mobile, which experienced an increase in revenue of nearly 50,000% between 2017 and 2020. This growth is partly attributed to Reynolds’ influence, with many subscribers joining because of his involvement. This led to a lucrative outcome when T-Mobile acquired Mint Mobile for $1.35 billion. From this deal, Reynolds earned approximately $300 million to $337.5 million.
