Sportswear giant Nike Inc. NKE has reportedly enlisted the services of Muge Erdirik Dogan, a seasoned Amazon.com Inc. AMZN executive, as its new chief technology officer.
What Happened: Nike has recruited Dogan, an experienced executive from Amazon, for the role of CTO.
Dogan’s appointment follows a significant tenure of 16 years at Amazon, where she held various positions in consumer categories and delivery operations before rising to the role of President of Amazon Fashion in 2021, reported Bloomberg.
The new appointment aligns perfectly with Nike’s strategy to boost direct online sales to consumers. This move underscores the growing importance of e-commerce and digital technology in retail.
“With Muge’s deep understanding of how technology can accelerate innovation, scale processes, increase efficiency, and ultimately drive growth, I’m confident her experience and leadership will help us capitalize on the opportunity ahead while keeping the athlete and consumer at the center,” John Donahoe, Nike’s CEO said in the email to staff, the report noted.
Why It Matters: The recruitment follows hot on the heels of Amazon’s recent announcement about shutting down its Amazon Style stores in California and Ohio. Nike has not yet issued any public statements or comments regarding this development.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, it was reported that Nike reportedly launched legal challenges against industry competitors New Balance and Skechers over patent infringements.
