The Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair slammed the ongoing disputes within the Republican party in Congress, likening it to a “clown show” on Tuesday.
What Happened: In an interview on "The Hill on NewsNation," Jaime Harrison, the DNC Chair, raised questions about former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) elbowing his colleagues.
"Kevin McCarthy is elbowing his colleagues," Harrison said, adding, "I mean, these folks, it's a clown show on the Hill right now."
His statement came in reference to an accusation by Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) that McCarthy had elbowed him in the Capitol hallway, an allegation that McCarthy has denied.
"I guess our elbows hit as I walked by," McCarthy told the media.
"If I would hit somebody, they would know I hit them."
Why It Matters: However, the incident involving McCarthy and Burchett is not the only recent clash in Congress. Recently, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and the president of the Teamsters union, Sean O’Brien, nearly came to blows during a Senate hearing on the same day.
Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter, confronted O’Brien about social media posts in which O’Brien had labeled Mullin a ‘clown’ and ‘fraud.’
In another contentious exchange, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) had a spat that led to Comer likening Moskowitz’s appearance to a ‘Smurf,’ a comment that Moskowitz later quipped about on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
