The former President of the U.S., Donald Trump, has been endorsed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott during an event near the U.S.-Mexico border.
What Happened: Trump received Abbott’s endorsement during a visit to Edinburg, Texas, on Sunday. The location was strategically chosen to spotlight Trump’s potential plans to reinforce immigration policies if he claims victory in the 2024 election.
Using the event as a platform to air his criticisms, Governor Abbott took a swipe at President Joe Biden‘s border policies, crediting the lowest border crossings in decades to Trump’s leadership.
“I’m here to tell you that there is no way, no way that America can continue under the leadership of Joe Biden as our president. We need a president who’s going to secure the border,” Abbott said.

Trump reciprocated gratitude for the endorsement, promising border security for Texas and other border states.
“This meant a lot to me,” Trump said.
“You’re not going to have to worry about the border anymore, governor,” Trump confidently added.
Why It Matters: Since Biden’s inauguration in 2021, over 5 million irregular border crossings have been documented. Trump’s campaign pledge includes a major crackdown on illegal immigration and bringing back the “remain in Mexico” program that Biden abolished.
Abbott, a leading Republican voice on border issues, has initiated the contentious Operation Lone Star border security program, which has put his state head-to-head with the Biden administration.
The endorsement from Governor Abbott, a significant figure in the Republican party and a vocal critic of current border policies could boost Trump’s standing among conservative voters. This development is particularly noteworthy in light of Trump’s potential bid for the presidency in 2024, as immigration and border security continue to be pressing issues in American politics.
