Tesla Wins Apology, $282 In Damages From 2021 Shanghai Auto Show Protester

One of the protesters against EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA from the Shanghai Auto Show in 2021 has reportedly been instructed to apologize to the automaker and pay damages.

What Happened: In 2021, the protesters known simply as “Ms. Li” from Shaanxi province and “Ms. Zhang” from Henan province appeared at the Tesla booth at the auto show alleging brake failure in Tesla vehicles.

Zhang said that her father had an accident in February 2021 while driving a Tesla Model 3 due to a brake malfunction. Li herself was involved in an accident while driving a Tesla Model 3 a month before in March 2021.

The court found Li liable for reputation infringement and ordered her to publicly apologize, pay damages, and bear the cost of vehicle appraisal, CNEVPOST reported

Li will now have to delete her Weibo posts against Tesla, apologize to Tesla on Weibo, and also pay Tesla 2000 yuan (about $282) in damages. She is also liable for 25,390 yuan in case processing fees and 20,000 yuan in vehicle appraisal fees, the report added.

Why It Matters: In May, it was reported that Zhang, who stood on a car in protest at the auto show, had lost a second lawsuit against Tesla.

Zhang initially lost her lawsuit against Tesla for unlawful invasion of individual privacy and earlier this year another for defamation.
