Former President Donald Trump reportedly plans to present his own closing statement in his civil fraud trial in New York.
What Happened: The decision to deliver the closing argument was made by Trump, who is a defendant in a case brought forward by New York Attorney General Letitia James, Associated Press reported, citing sources.
Trump’s attorney notified Judge Arthur Engoron about this decision earlier in the week. This is an unusual move as defendants generally entrust their legal teams with the task of presenting closing arguments.
James accused Trump of inflating his net worth by billions in his financial statements to secure business loans and insurance, an allegation that Trump denies.

Why It Matters: New York State is seeking $370 million in penalties, plus interest, and a prohibition on Trump conducting business in New York. The defense argues that any exaggerations were minor mistakes that did not influence the final calculations.
This came days after James sought a lifetime ban on Trump from the real estate industry in New York. This request, if granted, would also prohibit Trump from acting as an officer or director of any New York corporation. This move also carries significant implications for Trump’s future business endeavors.
The former president is a leading contender in the Republican primary race. The latest weekly Morning Consult poll asked registered voters who they would select in a hypothetical matchup of Trump versus Biden. Trump received 42% of the vote and Biden received 41% of the vote. 11% of voters selected ‘Someone Else' and 5% selected ‘Don't Know.'
