In a retaliatory move, Pakistan conducted airstrikes within Iranian territory, killing at least seven people. This action was a response to an Iranian airstrike on Iranian insurgents within Pakistan.
What Happened: The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the airstrikes on Thursday, which resulted in the deaths of numerous militants in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province, reported Associated Press.
The Pakistani government described the operation as “precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts.” This move was a direct response to an Iranian airstrike on Pakistani insurgents within Pakistan’s borders on Tuesday.
Both Pakistan and Iran have a history of accusing each other of providing shelter to militants. The recent Pakistani airstrikes targeted Pakistani separatists within Iran.
The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement affirming the country’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its national security against all threats.
Iran, however, has not yet responded to this development.
Why It Matters: This latest development follows a series of escalating tensions between Pakistan and Iran. Just a day before the Pakistani airstrikes, Pakistan accused Iran of violating its airspace, leading to the tragic deaths of two children. This incident occurred shortly after Iranian state media announced missile strikes on two bases of the militant group Jaish al Adl.
These consecutive events have significantly strained the diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries, leading to a concerning escalation in military actions.
