In a move that could redefine the email experience for Android users, Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Google is reportedly working on giving Gmail an AI boost.
What Happened: Google is working on an AI voice feature for Gmail, currently dubbed ‘Draft email with voice’, as spotted by TheSpAndroid and reported by TechRadar. As the name suggests, this feature will enable users to create email drafts using voice prompts.
The new feature is an enhancement to Google’s ‘Help me write’ tool, which was unveiled at the IO event in March. The tool generates draft emails based on user-provided written prompts. However, the ‘Draft email with voice’ feature will allow users to provide prompts vocally, thereby bypassing the need to type.
At present, both features are exclusive to Google’s invite-only Workspace Labs program, which lets select users test new AI features before they are rolled out to the broader public. The official launch dates for these AI tools have not been disclosed yet.
The upcoming Gmail feature surpasses the standard voice-typing functions found on an Android device’s keyboard. It is integrated into the Gmail app and opens immediately above the device’s keyboard when a new email is initiated. Users can hit the microphone icon to record their prompt and then tap ‘Create’ for Gmail to generate a full email draft.
While the public availability timeline and device compatibility for these features remain uncertain, they provide an intriguing peek into a potential time-saving feature in the Gmail app.
Why It Matters: At the Google I/O 2023 event, the tech giant showcased a range of AI advancements and new products. The ‘Draft email with voice’ feature is another step towards enhancing user experience and productivity through AI-powered tools.
