General Motors Co GM is recalling over 300,000 of its pickup trucks in the U.S. due to concerns about an unlatched tailgate opening.
According to the auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company is recalling 323,232 of its model year 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks equipped with power-unlatching tailgates.
In certain instances where water intrudes into these tailgates, causing a short circuit of the electronic gate-release switch, the gate may unlatch unexpectedly while driving, potentially leading to cargo falling off the vehicle bed and posing a safety hazard.
As a remedy to the identified issue, the company’s dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies at no cost to the driver. However, since parts are currently unavailable, the company advises drivers to ensure that the tailgate is securely closed and latched before driving until they receive the replacement.
