• Novartis NVS reported second quarter EPS of $1.06 which was below Zacks estimates of $1.12. Revenues rose 11.1% year over year to $11.7 billion versus Zacks estimates of $11.4 billion

• Fairchild Semiconductor FCS reported second quarter EPS of 40 cents versus Zacks estimates of 31 cents. Revenues increased 8.4% year over year to $409.6 million compared with Zacks estimates of $399 million

• Marriot International MAR reported second quarter EPS of 31 cents versus Zacks estimates of 28 cents. Revenues stood at $2.77 billion versus Zacks estimates of $2.51 billion

• Apple AAPL announced plans to address iPhone 4 related issues, following growing criticism about antenna-design issues, which culminated in Consumer Reports' failure to recommend the new smartphone

• Carlyle announced plans to purchase NBTY NTY for $3.8 billion in cash, or $55 per share

• Kaufman initiated coverage of IBM IBM with a Hold and a price target of $135

• Goldman Sachs GS and the SEC have reportedly been discussing a possible settlement, which could involve fines of more than $1 billion and avoid charges of civil fraud
