OpenAI Unveils First Third-Party Videos Created With Unreleased Sora Tool

In a recent development, OpenAI has revealed the first third-party videos crafted using its unreleased tool, Sora. The videos, which include a unique nature documentary and a narrative about a man with a balloon head, have elicited a mix of admiration and controversy.

What Happened: OpenAI released several short clips made by content creators who had early access to Sora, Business Insider reported on Tuesday. This marks the first time videos have been produced outside of OpenAI using this generative video tool, which has been creating a buzz in Hollywood.

Despite the striking visuals, the videos have not been immune to criticism. A former executive at Stability AI, who now heads an AI data-practices nonprofit, accused OpenAI of “artistwashing” with these videos.

OpenAI has also reportedly been in talks with Hollywood insiders, promoting Sora as a tool for full-length productions, as per Bloomberg.

Why It Matters: The videos unveiled offer a sneak peek into what Sora is capable of. From creating surreal nature documentaries to short films with fantastical elements, these videos demonstrate the tool’s potential to generate unique, high-quality content. However, the “artistwashing” allegation raises concerns about the ethical use of AI in content creation. As AI continues to evolve, the debate over its role in the arts is set to heat up.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati revealed that the Sora AI model is still undergoing “red teaming” to identify and rectify potential flaws before its public release. The actual delay, however, stems from concerns about AI being used to disseminate misinformation.

OpenAI’s Sora has impressed many with its capabilities, but OpenAI has clarified that it is still in the early stages of testing. It has no “final plans” to officially release Sora as a consumer product yet.
