Elon Musk Expresses Concern Over Ukraine's Potential NATO Membership: 'This Is Literally How The Nuclear Apocalypse Movie Starts'

Tesla Inc. CEO and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk commented on a post discussing Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

What Happened: Musk responded to a social media post on Friday that shared U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken‘s statement about Ukraine’s future NATO membership.

“This is literally how the nuclear apocalypse movie starts,” Musk remarked.

His comment has since ignited a flurry of online reactions, with many attempting to decipher its implications.

Musk also plugged in a short clip from the American television film ‘The Day After.’ The film depicts the events leading up to and following a nuclear war between NATO forces and the Warsaw Pact. The movie portrays the devastating consequences of nuclear war, including widespread destruction, radiation sickness and societal collapse.

Why It Matters: This comment from Musk comes in the wake of escalating tensions between NATO and Russia. In February, former U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial stance that the United States would not defend any NATO ally that failed to allocate at least 2% of its gross domestic product toward military defense.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin clarified that Russia had no plans to attack NATO countries, but warned that F-16 fighters in Ukraine would be shot down.

In April, NATO proposed a ‘Trump-Proof’ $107B fund to ensure long-term military support for Ukraine, an initiative aimed at protecting Ukraine's aid from potential disruptions.

Shortly after, the Kremlin declared that Russia and NATO were now in a state of "direct confrontation," a statement that coincided with the U.S.-led alliance’s 75th anniversary.
