Nancy Whiteman, the influential co-founder and CEO of Wana Brands, is resigning from her day-to-day duties at the company’s forefront by the end of May 2024, the company stated in a press release on Tuesday.
Whiteman’s departure marks a significant transition for Wana Brands, transforming from its inception in her kitchen in Boulder, Colorado fourteen years ago, to becoming a dominant force in the North American cannabis edibles market. Her next chapter will combine philanthropic efforts and her role on the Board of Managers for Canopy USA, owner of Wana Brands.
"While it is never easy for a founder to step away from the company they started, I've got full confidence that Joe and our Wana leadership team are well-positioned to continue Wana's growth. I also look forward to staying connected through my role on the Canopy USA board of managers." Whiteman said.
Leadership Transition: Upholding Wana’s Legacy
Joe Hodas, CMO of Wana Brands, will take over as CEO. Hodas has been a member of Wana Brands for four years and has twelve years of experience in the cannabis industry.
Hodas has been instrumental in the company’s strategic decisions, working closely with Whiteman and the leadership team to spearhead growth and innovation. “Taking the reins from Nancy is both an honor and a colossal challenge. She’s built an unparalleled legacy, and I am committed to guiding Wana with the same integrity, innovation, and passion that she has instilled in all of us.”
Under Hodas’s stewardship, Wana Brands is expected to maintain its upward trajectory, as he plans to expand Wana’s market footprint, expanding its domestic presence across the East Coast and exploring international markets such as Switzerland.
The Wana Brands Foundation (WBF)
In addition to her position on the Canopy USA board, Nancy will continue to play a significant role in the Wana Brands Foundation (WBF), which she founded with a personal grant of $50 million in 2022
"I am looking forward to being able to devote more time to the Wana Brands Foundation. While we have already made almost $5 million in donations to over 150 organizations, I'm excited to learn more about the issues that the Foundation supports so we can increase our impact and be more effective in making the world a better place." Whiteman remarked, showcasing her ongoing commitment to the future of the company.
WBF has significantly contributed to the community by donating to more than 150 charities since 2021 through their #4ward20 campaign. This initiative, launched in response to the global lockdowns and aligned with the 4/20 holiday spirit, focuses on sustainability and social responsibility, prioritizing meaningful societal impact over commercial gains. Avoiding disposable promotional materials, Wana demonstrates a profound commitment to sustainable practices and fostering community well-being, living up to its promise to "keep hope high" through active engagement with charitable causes.
