In a recent meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda, former U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Poland, amid conversations on Ukraine and the Middle East.
What Happened: Trump met with Duda in New York, where the Polish President is attending the United Nations, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Trump expressed his unwavering backing for Poland, a stance that was evident during his previous term as president and contrasted with the apprehensions of other European leaders about U.S. support for Ukraine and NATO under Trump’s leadership.
“The people of Poland love him (Duda)… and that’s not an easy thing to accomplish, but he’s done a fantastic job and he’s my friend,” Trump told reporters.
“We’re behind Poland all the way,” he added.
The leaders also discussed the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Why It Matters: Trump’s stance on Ukraine has been a topic of interest, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claiming in March that Trump plans to halt financial aid to Ukraine if he wins the upcoming U.S. election
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown openness to Trump’s suggestions for ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The meeting summary disclosed that the leaders discussed Duda’s suggestion for NATO members to dedicate at least 3% of their GDP to defense, an increase from the current 2% minimum target. This proposal was previously highlighted by Duda in March, in response to fears of potential Russian aggression.
