PlayStation faced backlash after announcing that Helldivers 2 players on PC must link their Steam account to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to continue playing.
This requirement was part of the game’s original plan but was not enforced initially due to a messy launch. Sony Group Corp‘s SONY announcement of the account linking requirement led to a significant outcry from the community.
Following the announcement, the game faced significant backlash on Steam, resulting in over 14,000 negative reviews in a single day. This led to a drop in the game’s review score from “mostly positive” to “mixed.”

In response to the criticism, PlayStation reversed its decision. In a tweet, PlayStation stated, “Helldivers fans — we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.”
“Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we'll keep you updated on future plans," PlayStation added.
The reversal followed a turbulent period for Arrowhead Games Studios, the developers of Helldivers 2, and its community managers. Arrowhead’s CEO spent the weekend apologizing to angry fans across various social media platforms.
“Ouch, right in the review score,” CEO Johaan Pilstedt tweeted. “Well, I guess it’s warranted. Sorry everyone for how this all transpired. I hope we will make it up and regain the trust by providing a continued great game experience. I just want to make great games!”
