Nokia Demonstrates Future Of Voice Calls With 3D Audio: Details

Zinger Key Points
  • Nokia makes the first cellular call using the new 3GPP Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec.
  • The IVAS codec allows consumers to hear 3D spatial sound in real-time.

Nokia Corporation NOK conducted the world’s first live immersive voice and audio call over a cellular network. Pekka Lundmark, Nokia’s President and CEO, connected with Stefan Lindström, Finland’s Ambassador of Digitalization and New Technologies, using the Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec technology.

This technology allows real-time spatial sound, vastly enhancing the typical monophonic smartphone call experience.

The IVAS codec, part of the upcoming 5G Advanced standard, enables users to hear sound spatially, creating a three-dimensional audio experience.

“The live immersive voice and audio experience enabled by IVAS improves the richness and quality of the call, and the three-dimensional sound experience makes interaction more lifelike and engaging, bringing a wealth of new benefits to personal and professional communication,” said Lindström.

The IVAS codec technology supports live spatial audio across various connected devices, including smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Developed by a consortium of 13 companies, the IVAS codec standard ensures interoperability between operators, chipset, and handset manufacturers.

Nokia successfully demonstrated the IVAS technology in a real-time call, despite it not yet being implemented in mobile networks.

“This groundbreaking audio technology takes you to the caller’s environment creating a spatial and massively improved listening experience for voice and video calls, offering significant benefits for enterprise and industrial applications,” said Lundmark.

This first live call used Nokia’s proprietary Immersive Voice technology over a public 5G network.
