The tournament takes place at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, marking the fourth time the tournament has played at this course. In 2014, Martin Kaymer won by eight strokes the last time the U.S. Open was at Pinehurst No. 2 with the majority of golfers hitting -1 or worse in a tough event.

Betting Odds: Here are the current betting odds for the U.S. Open from DraftKings Inc DKNG with the top 10 favored golfers, listed with their payout for a win and a top 10 finish:

  • Scottie Scheffler: +280 winner, -275 Top 10
  • Xander Schauffele: +1,000, +110
  • Rory McIlroy: +1,100, +120
  • Collin Morikawa: +1,400, +150
  • Viktor Hovland: +1,800, +190
  • Bryson DeChambeau: +2,000, +210
  • Brooks Koepka: +2,000, +210
  • Ludvig Aberg: +2,200, +210
  • Jon Rahm: +2,500, +250
  • Tommy Fleetwood: +3,500, +320

Scheffler being a huge favorite comes with some historic context. Listed at around 3/1 odds at most sportsbooks, including William Hill, Scheffler is the biggest favorite to win the U.S. Open since Tiger Woods in 2009, who was 2/1 at the time.

"Scottie Scheffler reasserted his dominance in the world of golf with another win at the Memorial last week and he's now 3/1 to scoop a third major title," William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said. "Not since the Tiger Woods era of the 2000s have we seen a price on this scale and it’s hard to look beyond the outright favorite."

Top Storylines to Watch: Scottie Scheffler's dominance in golf in 2024 is the top storyline for the U.S. Open. Not even getting arrested has been able to slow Scheffler down, having won five of his last eight golf events.

Scheffler finished third in last year's U.S. Open and tied for second at the event in 2022. Scheffler could become the sixth person to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. The feat was last accomplished by Jordan Spieth in 2015 and before that Woods in 2002. Other golfers to accomplish the feat were Craig Wood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951), Arnold Palmer (1960) and Jack Nicklaus (1972).

With five wins on the season, Scheffler could become the fourth golfer since 1983 to win six times or more in the same season, joining Nick Price (1994), Woods (2000, 2005, 2006) and Vijay Singh (2004).

Scheffler has taken part in 13 golf tournaments in 2024 with five wins, 13 made cuts, and 12 top-10 finishes.

Another storyline outside the betting favorites will be Woods. Taking part in his fourth tournament of the year, Woods' recent form won't likely excite bettors. He withdrew from the Genesis Invitational, finished 60th at the Masters, and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Woods last took part in a U.S. Open in 2020, where he missed the cut.

The flat layout of Pinehurst No. 2 and weather expected to be in the 90s could help Woods.

"It's like home. Hot and humid is what we deal with every single day at home in Florida, so that's nothing new. I would rather play in hot, humid conditions any day than anything cold. I think pretty much anyone my age will definitely like it a little hotter," he said earlier this week.

Woods is listed with odds of +30,000 to win the U.S. Open, +1,800 to finish in the top 10 and +650 to finish in the top 20. Woods qualifying for the cut offers a payout of +220, with the top 60 golfers, including ties, among the initial 156 participants advancing.

Also in the field this weekend is Phil Mickelson. While Mickelson has many PGA Tour wins, the U.S. Open remains the only major that he hasn't won. A win would give Mickelson a career Grand Slam.

The betting odds for Mickelson are +35,000 to win, +2,200 to finish top 10 and +750 to finish top 20.

Another golfer who will draw some bets is Morikawa who has 10 top-25 finishes and six top-10s in 2024 with 12 cuts made in 14 tournaments. While Morikawa has not won in 2024, he was in the final pairing for the Masters and PGA Championship this season. A win at the U.S. Open would give Morikawa three of the four majors won in a career bid for the Grand Slam.

Bettors may also be looking for a longshot winner or a first time major winner. Five of the last six U.S. Open winners won their first major at the event. The top favorites who are major free are Hovland, Aberg and Fleetwood.
