German automaker Volkswagen AG VWAGY said on Friday that it has integrated ChatGPT into some models featuring its new-generation infotainment system including new vehicles in the all-electric ID family.
What Happened: OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now available on the new Golf, new Tiguan, and new Passat as well, the company said. As a result of the integration, customers can avail a range of new options previously unavailable such as having search results read out to them, it said.
“By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into the backend of our voice assistant, we are now offering drivers the opportunity to use this artificial intelligence on a daily basis, thus underlining how innovative our products are," Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development at Volkswagen said.
The new feature is accessible through the IDA voice assistant and does not require the customer to take their eyes off the road. The development significantly expands the capabilities of the current Volkswagen models, which already allow users to control the infotainment, navigation, and climate control systems using the IDA online voice assistant.
Volkswagen did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for confirmation on the geographies where the AI tool would be available on its cars.
Why It Matters: With the addition of ChatGPT, Volkswagen customers can now find answers on tourist attractions, past football tournaments, or maths problems. If a query to the IDA voice assistant cannot be answered by the Volkswagen system, it will be forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT, and the answer will be provided in the Volkswagen voice, the company said.
ChatGPT does not gain access to vehicle data and all questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure data protection. The technology enables conversations in American English, British English, Spanish, Czech, and German.
Volkswagen first presented vehicles with ChatGPT integrated into its IDA voice assistant at the electronic trade show CES 2024 in January.
