Karkubi, controversially known as the “poor man’s drug,” is a mixture of substances that has existed since the 1970s. However, its use significantly increased in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

This drug began gaining popularity in Morocco (where it is produced, along with Algeria) and, to a lesser extent, in Spain, where the medications used to make it are often sourced.

The mix contains antidepressants, anxiolytics and antiepileptics, majoun (a paste made from nuts, honey and hashish), and sometimes alcohol and glue. Previously, benzodiazepines like diazepam, lorazepam and tetrazepam were used, but now it is made with the benzodiazepine clonazepam (an anxiolytic known commercially as Rivotril and Zatrix) and the barbiturate phenobarbital (an antiepileptic known as Gardenal).

Is Karkubi Smoked?

No, Karkubi is not smoked. This drug comes in potent tablets.

What Effects Does Karkubi Have?

Hallucinations, psychopathic behaviors, aggressiveness, amnesia, a sense of euphoria and power, and behavioral alterations.

What Are The Risks Of Karkubi?

Beyond its effects, Karkubi can also cause severe intoxication, coma, accidents and violent behaviors.

While Karkubi has been around for years, the situation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in Spain, where it has become a significant player in the illicit drug market. In January 2022, a record operation seized over 500,000 pills between Spain and Morocco, according to Alchimia Web, highlighting the widespread circulation of this drug. It raises alarms not only because it is dangerous but also because it is highly addictive.
