Kamala Harris Has Majority Support From Democrats To Run Against Trump In 2024 Presidential Race: Poll

A recent poll has revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the majority of Democratic delegate support, positioning her as the party’s nominee against Donald Trump.

What Happened: Following President Joe Biden‘s announcement to withdraw his reelection bid, prominent Democrats have rallied behind Harris, according to an Associated Press survey published on Wednesday. This move is seen as an attempt to quell weeks of internal party disputes and unite in the mission to defeat Trump with just over 100 days until Election Day.

Several state delegations, including Texas and Harris’s home state of California, convened late Monday to confirm their support for Harris. By Monday night, Harris had secured the support of more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win on a first ballot, according to the AP tally.

Despite the substantial support, the AP has not declared Harris the new presumptive nominee as convention delegates are still free to vote for their preferred candidate at the convention in August.

Harris expressed gratitude to President Biden and the Democratic Party for their faith in her and is eager to present her case directly to the American people. She is set to launch her campaign in the battleground state of Wisconsin on Tuesday. The campaign has already witnessed a surge of interest with over 28,000 new volunteers registered since the announcement.

The Democratic National Convention is slated to take place from Aug. 19-22 in Chicago, with a virtual roll call to formally nominate the candidate as early as Aug. 1.

Why It Matters: Following President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, Harris was anticipated to be the frontrunner for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2024 presidential election.

Despite potential legal challenges from Republican factions questioning Harris’s right to use the Biden-Harris campaign funds, experts are confident that these lawsuits will not succeed.
