Editor’s Note: This story has been updated with a statement from Amazon.

Online retailer Amazon.com Inc AMZN intends to deploy at least 100,000 electric delivery vans (EDV) on the road by 2030 but is nowhere close to its target.

What Happened: According to Amazon’s 2023 sustainability report released earlier this month, the company deployed only about 19,000 electric delivery vans in the U.S., Europe, and India as of 2023, or less than 20% of its 2030 goal four years after announcing it in the second half of 2019.

The company’s goal is to have 100,000 EDVs on the road by 2030, including from California-based EV startup Rivian Automotive RIVN and other manufacturers.

The company, however, has more years to add 81,000 more EDVs to its fleet.

Why It Matters: In 2023, Amazon delivered 680 million packages globally with electric vehicles alone.

In the U.S., Amazon had 11,800 Rivian EDVs in its fleet in 2023, marking a 354% jump from the 2,600 it had in 2022. The retail company also deployed over 300 Rivian EDVs in Europe.

In 2019, Amazon announced a partnership with Rivian to order 100,000 EDVs from the EV startup alone by 2030 for deliveries in the U.S. However, the company has now altered its deployment goals to at least 100,000 EDVs around the globe from Rivian and also other manufacturers by 2030.

An Amazon spokesperson told Benzinga that there is, however, no change in the company’s commitment to Rivian.

“We continue to be excited about our relationship with Rivian and we'll continue to grow our electric fleet as we work to bring 100,000 of the custom vehicles to the road,” they said.

Rivian did not respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.
