Elon Musk has committed to investigating allegations that his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter) is curbing automated posts after the National Weather Service Twin Cities, Minnesota, complained about it.
What Happened: Over the weekend, NWS Twin Cities, Minnesota, took to X and said that the platform has been restricting automated tweets.
“X is now limiting automated tweets and as a result, this account can no longer post all watches/warnings/advisories as they are issued,” the NWS complained.
The service went on to advise followers to have multiple means for receiving weather information and alerts.
In response, Musk, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 and later rebranded it as X, said, “This should not be happening. Will investigate.”

Why It Matters: Last year in April, Musk’s social media platform decided to revoke API access. The move had a significant impact on public service accounts, which are crucial for providing essential updates and information to the public.
Many of these accounts were unable to post automated breaking news and events, similar to the current situation faced by the National Weather Service accounts.
Meanwhile, last month, X and Musk successfully defended a lawsuit seeking $500 million in severance pay for thousands of employees laid off after the acquisition of the social media company in 2022.
The lawsuit alleged that X and Musk owed over $500 million in severance pay to approximately 6,000 laid-off employees. However, U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson ruled that the employees' claims were not covered under The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).
