Tesla CEO Elon Musk Scraps Two-Week Program To Sell EVs Via Costco in Taiwan (Updated)

Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that he has scrapped the program to sell the company’s EVs via Costco in Taiwan, a day after its posters did the rounds on social media platform X.

What Happened: “I just canned this program. Was not approved,” Musk said about the proposed partnership with Costco.

As per posters shared on social media by Tesla enthusiasts earlier this week, Tesla partnered with Costco to sell its electric vehicles in Taiwan for two weeks from Aug. 5 through Aug. 18. Tesla will offer the first 50 people to buy a Tesla car at Costco 5,000 km of free supercharger miles, among other goodies, the poster added.

However, the company's official X account for updates in Taiwan did not share the poster.

Why It Matters: Tesla sells its Model 3, Y, S, and X in Taiwan.

The company's Model 3 sedan, its cheapest offering, starts at about NT$1.7 million ($51,861) in the country while its more popular Model Y SUV starts at about NT$1.73 million ($52,929).

It is unclear if any Tesla vehicles were sold via Costco at the start of the week before Musk scrapped the program on Tuesday.
