Tesla Recalls Over 9K Units Of Older Model X SUVs Over Concerns Of Cosmetic Trim Pieces On Roof Falling Off

EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA is recalling 9,136 Model X vehicles in the U.S. owing to concerns that the cosmetic trim pieces on the vehicle roof may separate and pose a risk to fellow drivers on the road.

What Happened: The recall population includes only model year 2016 Model X SUVs. The cosmetic trim prices on the front and center roof of the vehicles may be attached without primer and may subsequently separate from the vehicle, creating a road hazard for other drivers on the roads and increasing the probability of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.

As for a solution, Tesla service will test the adhesion of the trims and reattach the pieces as required, free of any cost to the customer, the auto safety regulator said. The company may also replace the trims if required.

Why It Matters: Tesla recalled these vehicles before in 2020 but is issuing a recall once again after determining that the fix deployed in 2020 was insufficient to prevent a separation of the cosmetic trim pieces.

Though the company is not aware of any collisions, injuries, or deaths related to the issue, it has identified 40 warranty claims, 6 field reports, and 125 service reports that may be related as of Aug. 14, it told the regulator.

Tesla issued a recall of over 11,000 of its Cybertrucks in June citing similar concerns of a cosmetic applique along the exterior of the trunk bed trim separating while driving due to improper adhesion.
