Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Plans To Present Comprehensive Strategy To Biden To End War With Russia

In an effort to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed his intentions to present a comprehensive strategy to U.S. President Joe Biden.

What Happened: Zelenskyy expressed his belief that the war with Russia can only be ended through dialogue. However, he stressed the importance of Kyiv being in a strong position before such negotiations can commence. The proposed plan includes Kyiv’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region and other economic and diplomatic measures.

While Zelenskyy did not disclose further details about the plan, he mentioned plans to discuss it with Vice President Kamala Harris and potentially Donald Trump, the two nominees for the forthcoming U.S. presidential election.

Zelenskyy’s remarks indicate his preference for an international peace summit as the main platform for these discussions. The inaugural summit of this kind, which took place in Switzerland in June, saw numerous delegations in attendance, but Russia was notably absent. China, the world’s second-largest economy, also did not participate.

Following Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region on Aug. 6, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared that talks were no longer an option. However, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict during a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Why It Matters: Zelenskyy has previously called on Western allies to lift restrictions on strikes against Russian targets amid escalating air attacks. He believes that Ukraine needs to strike deep within enemy lines to weaken Russia’s military strength and negotiate a fair end to the war.

Ukraine has also begun using F-16 warplanes in combat against Russia. These are the most advanced weapons that the U.S.-led coalition has supplied Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Did You Know?

Zelenskyy remains adamant that Russia’s attempts to dictate terms in any settlement are unacceptable. He highlighted Ukraine’s advancements in domestic weapons production and its successful test of a domestically-produced ballistic missile.
