  • No word from VP Harris and Ron DeSantis on Trump's support for rescheduling marijuana & FLA's legalization, but yes from the weed industry
  • "It is a monumental moment in our ongoing fight for federal cannabis reform" that both major parties embrace legalization, says one advocate

So far, there has been no news from VP Kamala Harris and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, but the cannabis industry was quick to respond on Monday to the breaking news that Donald Trump has come out in support of federally rescheduling cannabis, legalizing adult-use marijuana in Florida and passing the SAFE Banking Act.

"Reclassifying cannabis would mark a historic swift away from the nation's failed drug war. Cannabis never belonged on Schedule I, and the drug's low abuse potential and proven medical use warrant a Schedule III designation if not outright descheduling," said David Culver, senior vice president of public affairs at the US Cannabis Council.

"He joins millions of Americans who have reassessed their views on cannabis in recent years," said Culver. He also praised Trump for joining "Republicans and Democrats in Florida in voting for Amendment 3, adding to its already strong bipartisan support. President Trump’s support could prove pivotal for meeting the 60% threshold required to become law."

Adam Goers, co-chair of the Coalition for Cannabis Scheduling Reform, said, “Today makes clear that reclassifying cannabis is not a partisan issue. The shift will benefit millions of Americans and mark a clear break from the failed policies of the past. We look forward to swift action by the Drug Enforcement Administration to finalize the proposed rule.”

Goers added, “Reclassifying cannabis is smart science, smart policy, and smart politics. With last night’s announcement by former President Trump, both major party candidates support moving cannabis down to Schedule III. There should be no further delay."

Ali Amirhooshmand, head of government relations for Dutchie, an e-commerce platform for the cannabis industry, said Trump's call for "smart cannabis regulations, safe product access and the rescheduling of cannabis to Schedule 3 reflects the growing bipartisan momentum for reform."

Saphira Galoob, executive director of the National Cannabis Roundtable, also weighed in.

“We welcome the support of former President Trump for states' rights to implement their own cannabis legalization policies. As we've seen in 38 states to date, such legal programs implement strict regulations to best protect our children, patients, consumers, and communities,” Galoob said.

"It is a monumental moment in our ongoing fight for federal cannabis reform as the Presidential nominees of our two major parties have now both embraced legalization efforts, acknowledging that no one should be in jail for personal use of cannabis and that the establishment of responsible, regulated cannabis markets is the pathway to a safer America."
