The Florida Young Republicans have taken a bold step by endorsing Amendment 3, a measure on the November ballot that would legalize recreational cannabis for adults aged 21 and over.
This move challenges the official stance of the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) and Governor Ron DeSantis, who remain opposed.
Aligning with Donald Trump and State Senator Joe Gruters, the group has publicly supported the amendment.

A Stand For Personal Freedom
Jake Hoffman, executive director of the Tampa Bay Young Republicans, framed the support for Amendment 3 as a win for individual liberty.
"By legalizing recreational marijuana for adults, we can empower Floridians to make their own choices while generating significant revenue and creating new job opportunities," Hoffman stated. He sees the measure as an overdue step forward for the state.
Growing Fractures In The GOP
However, not all young Republicans are on board. The Capital Young Republicans and the Florida Federation of Young Republicans have voiced their opposition, accusing the Florida Young Republicans of rushing the decision without proper discussion.
They argue that Amendment 3 prioritizes corporate interests over public safety, raising concerns about child access to marijuana edibles and the lack of adequate regulation.
A Party Divided
While Trump and Gruters represent a break from the party line, the GOP is far from unified. Recent polling shows 51% of Republicans now favor the amendment, up from 44% earlier this year.
As Florida heads to the polls, the future of cannabis legalization—and its impact on the party—remains uncertain.
