China Slams US For Shielding Israel, Blocking Gaza Ceasefire Efforts As War Nears 1 Year

China has accused United States of shielding Israel and obstructing ceasefire efforts in the Gaza conflict.

What Happened: China has accused the United States of repeatedly protecting Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. This accusation was made during a series of statements at the United Nations in New York, South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

Chinese diplomats, over two days of meetings, alleged that Washington has been obstructing ceasefire efforts. They stressed that Israel ending its occupation of Palestinian territories is a “legal obligation,” not an option.

During a UN Security Council briefing on Monday, China's deputy permanent representative Geng Shuang questioned why the council had failed to halt the “human tragedy” in Gaza. He noted that civilian deaths in Gaza have exceeded 41,000, with most victims being women and children, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.

Geng criticized the US for vetoing three previous ceasefire resolutions at the UNSC. He stated, “Had the US not shielded one side time and again, multiple resolutions of this council would not have been flagrantly rejected and defied.”

Geng also condemned attacks on humanitarian agencies, which have resulted in the deaths of 224 UN Relief and Works Agency staff members. He called on Israel to investigate these attacks and hold the perpetrators accountable.

At the UN General Assembly's emergency special session, China's permanent representative Fu Cong reiterated that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory violates international law. He emphasized that ending the occupation is a “legal obligation” for Israel, not a choice.

Why It Matters: This accusation from China comes amid a backdrop of increasing geopolitical tensions. In April, China reaffirmed its support for Tehran, strengthening ties with Iran following Iran's direct assault on Israel. During a phone conversation with Iran's Foreign Minister, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China's intention to advance cooperation with Iran and acknowledged Iran's stance on its military actions as self-defense.

Additionally, the militant group Hamas has been reportedly armed with weapons from Iran, China, Russia, and North Korea. Despite a 17-year blockade, Hamas has managed to accumulate a diverse set of weaponry, effectively using them in urban warfare against Israeli forces.
