Cannabis Investors Are Looking For Companies With 'Realistic Profit Margins,' Says Expert

Zinger Key Points
  • As the cannabis industry grows, investors are prioritizing profitability, scalability, and strong branding.
  • Darren Lampert highlights key factors for investor interest.

As the cannabis industry continues to develop, investors are shifting their focus and becoming increasingly selective when evaluating opportunities. With evolving markets and regulatory complexities, the qualities that attract investors are changing, especially in states with established markets like Colorado and Oregon.

Ahead of the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, Darren Lampert, CEO and co-founder of GrowGeneration shared his perspective on what investors are seeking in cannabis companies today.

Profitability and Sustainability Take Center Stage

As the cannabis market grows, profitability is emerging as a critical factor for investors. Lampert highlighted that the boom-and-bust cycles seen in early cannabis startups have prompted a shift in priorities. “Investors are now prioritizing companies with sustainable business models and realistic profit margins,” he explained. According to him, a proven path to profitability or a clear strategy to achieve it is essential for companies looking to secure investor interest.

Scale and Market Presence Matter

Another factor drawing attention from investors is the ability to scale efficiently, particularly in states with mature markets. Companies that have expanded their operations successfully in states like Colorado, Oregon, and Illinois are generating increased interest.

Lampert noted that strong multi-state operators (MSOs) are particularly attractive. “Brands with strong multi-state operator models are also attractive, especially those that can manage complex regulatory landscapes,” Lampert said.

Proprietary Products and Branding Capture Attention

In an increasingly competitive industry, companies offering something distinctive stand out. He says differentiation is critical, whether through proprietary products such as unique cannabis strains, formulations, or technology.

Lampert emphasized that branding also plays a crucial role, with companies that build emotional connections with consumers gaining a competitive edge. “Investors are intrigued by companies that offer proprietary products,” he said.

As the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference approaches, industry leaders and investors will pay close attention to how these developments unfold.
