Sony's PlayStation 4 Achieves New Sales Milestone

Sony SNE has sold more than 2.1 million units of its latest game console.

The company made the official announcement today, just days after PlayStation 4 was released in Europe.

According to MCV, Sony sold 250,000 units in the United Kingdom alone in just 48 hours. This is significantly higher than the 150,000 Xbox One units that Microsoft MSFT reportedly sold.

These early sales figures have already allowed PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to eclipse the lifetime sales of Wii U, Nintendo's latest console, in the United Kingdom.

"It's an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn't have done it without you," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, wrote on the company's official blog. "I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence."

House went on to say that the best part of this achievement is that PlayStation 4's journey has only just begun. He reiterated that the company has an "incredible lineup" of games from the "best developers in the world."

"We will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead," he added.

Microsoft has yet to update investors regarding how many Xbox One units were sold during its first full week at retail. The console arrived in stores on November 22. More than one million units were sold globally within the first 24 hours.

Xbox 360, Microsoft's previous game console, has sold 80 million units since it was released in 2005. That averages out to roughly 10 million units per year for the last eight years.

PlayStation 3, Sony's last console, has sold 81 million units since it was released in 2006.
