The first Rolex to make it to the Moon is now up for auction, and watch enthusiasts and collectors are buzzing. The Rolex GMT-Master was worn by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, and Kevin O’Leary, a well-known investor, watch enthusiast, and someone who wears a watch on both wrists, believes the final price will surprise everyone.

Don't Miss:

In 1971, Edgar Mitchell participated in NASA’s Apollo 14 mission, becoming the sixth person to walk on the Moon. Mitchell carried not only his official Omega Speedmaster but also his own Rolex GMT-Master, which became the first Rolex worn on the moon.

RR Auctions is now auctioning Mitchell’s Rolex, and the bidding is heating up. At the time of writing, it had already reached $132,000, and their experts predict the final price could go well beyond $400,000.

Kevin O’Leary recently shared his excitement on Fox Business, saying that the final sale price will be one for the history books. Noting that timepieces of historical significance frequently surpass expectations, he compared it to Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona, which sold for $17.2 million.

This particular GMT-Master is unique in several ways. The inscription on the back reads, “WORN BY CDR. E. MITCHELL ON APOLLO 14, 1971, TO KARLIN – MY DAUGHTER,” adding a personal touch. It also comes with letters of authenticity signed by Mitchell and his daughter Karlyn, and was featured in film footage from the Apollo 14 mission. All of this adds to its authenticity as a piece of space exploration history.

Although astronauts were issued Omega Speedmasters for space missions, Mitchell also chose to wear his Rolex, making it a rare find. Only one other Rolex GMT-Master, worn by astronaut Ron Evans during Apollo 17, has been publicly auctioned.

The auction is closing on Oct. 25, and the current bid of $132,000 might just be a drop in the bucket because, as Kevin O’Leary says, “Everybody’s been waiting for it to come to auction. I predict you’re going to be stunned by the price when it finally sells.”

With everyone from watch collectors and enthusiasts to the wealthy and powerful looking for extremely unique items, this auction offers a rare chance to purchase a watch that is more than a timepiece anyone could buy. It is a testament to one of humankind’s greatest triumphs.

That’s why this exceptional Rolex honors Edgar Mitchell’s legacy and represents the spirit of adventure, from the Apollo 14 mission to the auction floor. The lucky winner of this auction will receive a piece of human aspiration and discovery in addition to a watch.
