Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), known for her resilience and iconic self-expression, is the inspiration behind the new cannabis brand Alas Pa' Volar (Wings to Fly).
The brand, founded by Marisela Nuño, CEO of the Los Angeles-based Hierba Buena, will have a soft launch on Dec. 16.
It will formally open for business in early 2025.
Drawing on the mysticism of Kahlo's art and life, Alas Pa' Volar celebrates Latino heritage, artisanal craftsmanship and premium cannabis products. The name, "Wings to Fly," comes from Kahlo's handwritten words in one of her final paintings, “Pies pa qué los quiero si tengo alas pa' volar," which translates to: “Feet, why do I need them if I have wings to fly.”
Personal Trauma To Artistic Expression
Kahlo contracted polio at age six, which left her with a distinct limp. At the age of 18, she moved to Mexico City to study medicine. Shortly after, a devastating bus accident changed the course of her life.
The crash left her with multiple fractures, a punctured uterus and a broken spinal column. During her lengthy recovery period, she began painting self-portraits that reflected her mental state and suffering. She painted her own reflection in a mirror above her bed during her long convalescence.

Kahlo’s Descendants
The Kahlo family, including her great-grandnieces, supports Alas Pa' Volar and approves the imagery adorning its packaging. They point to Frida's personal connection to cannabis, which she is said to have used as a natural remedy to treat chronic pain. Her family’s involvement, notes Nuño, ensures that the brand stays true to Kahlo's legacy, embracing her values of wellness, creativity and cultural heritage. According to her great-grandnieces, Kahlo also turned to topical cannabis remedies to manage her suffering.
Kahlo was married to the famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera who along with his peers, also indulged. "There are pictures of [Kahlo] smoking hand-rolled cigarettes in her artwork. We did talk about it, but we can't confirm or deny," said Nuño.
"Alas Pa' Volar is more than just a product line — it's a tribute to Frida Kahlo and a celebration of our Latino heritage," said Nuño, according to Prepared Foods magazine. "At Hierba Buena LA, we're cultivating exclusive, in-house cannabis strains crafted specifically for this brand, ensuring every product embodies the authenticity, creativity and passion Frida Kahlo represents. This brand was created to honor everything Frida was and the inspiration she continues to be today."
Mexican illustrator Francisco Herrera developed the brand's visual identity. Herrera is known for his work with Disney and Marvel Comics. Herrera’s winged spider monkey logo, is said to be inspired by Kahlo's beloved pets and mystical imagery.
