EV giant Tesla Inc. TSLA issued 15 recalls in 2024, impacting over 5.13 million vehicles. However, a whopping majority of the recalls were fixed with over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and only a select few required vehicle owners to visit a service center to resolve an issue.

Tesla Recalls In 2024: The biggest recall issued by Tesla in 2024 was the one in February involving nearly 2.2 million vehicles. It was also the first recall by the company involving its stainless steel Cybertruck. The company fixed the issue via an OTA update and did not require customers to visit the service center.

Overall, eight of the 15 recalls issued by the company this year involved fixes provided by over-the-air updates. Merely seven of the total recalls issued by the company required the vehicle owners to visit the service center. The seven recalls collectively impacted less than 40,000 Tesla vehicles.

Cybertruck Required Most Physical Fixes: Interestingly, a majority of the recalls that required a physical fix involved the company’s latest offering- the Cybertruck.

Four recalls issued by Tesla this year impacting the Cybertruck exclusively required fixes that required a visit to the Tesla service center. The recalls cumulatively impacted over 30,000 Cybertrucks. However, it is important to note that one Cybertruck could have been impacted under different recalls, meaning that the total number of vehicles impacted could indeed be lower.

Tesla Trails Behind Big Names In Number Of Recalls: The most number of recalls issued this year were by Stellantis NV, parent to multiple brands including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Maserati, as per data from U.S. auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Ford issued the second most number of recalls after Stellantis.
