Who Knew? GE Has $489 Billion in Debt! (GE)

General Electric GE is among the bluest of blue chip stocks in American equity markets. In 1896, GE was one of the original 12 companies listed on the newly formed Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and still remains after 114 years. The company has an astounding 300,000+ employees around the world, and is diversified in energy, technology, media and financial services. GE also has a surprising total debt: over $489 billion+! The company's total debt as a percentage of total assets stands a little above 65%. When GE's $73.9 billion in cash and short-term investments are included, the net debt is lowered to $415 billion. The staggering numbers are actually a reduction from previous years, when debt surpassed $500 billion. The numbers haven't hurt GE stock, however, as shares have gained 8% this year. GE closed Monday at $15.46.
