The Bull Case
- Target underperformed other retailers in fiscal 2024. Its higher mix of discretionary products benefited the company in 2024, as was exhibited by its recent sales results for November and December. Discretionary categories delivered a meaningful sequential acceleration in sales, the analyst said.
- "We also think TGT can benefit over time from leveraging its strong fulfillment model and its alternative revenue streams, including Roundel (advertising), Target Circle (membership), and Target Plus (marketplace)," she further wrote.
- The stock current valuation suggests "limited downside potential," McShane added.
The Bear Case
- Target did miss its earnings estimate for the third quarter and lowered its full-year guidance, reflecting concerns around whether it can return to 6% operating margins, the analyst stated.
- Investors are also worried about Target losing market share, with a more successful performance by Walmart Inc WMT, which continues to outperform Target in same store sales, she added.
- "Investors may also be concerned about margin pressure for 4Q given EPS guidance was reiterated, with TGT calling out record sales during Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotional periods," McShane further wrote.
Price Action: Shares of Targethad risen by0.81% to $134.69 at the time of publication on Tuesday.
