Mercedes-Benz’s MBGAF EV drivers in the U.S. can now charge at over 20,000 Tesla Inc. TSLA supercharger locations using an adapter, the German automaker announced on Thursday.

What Happened: Customers can purchase the adapters through an authorized dealer and use them to charge on the supercharger network now.

Select EV models from the German automaker will come equipped with a port compatible with the supercharger, removing the need for the adapter, the company said.

Mercedes is the latest to gain access to the supercharger network. Drivers of EVs from Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Lucid, and Nissan also have access to the supercharger network across North America.

BMW, Genesis, Jaguar Land Rover, Hyundai, and Kia drivers are also slated to gain access going forward.

Why It Matters: With Tesla itself adding more EVs on the road and opening the network to EV drivers from rival automakers, demand for charging infrastructure is on a steady rise.

Tesla executive Max de Zegher on Thursday acknowledged the need for more superchargers to alleviate the gap between availability and demand.

“We’re working around the clock to keep up with demand, including adding 500-1000 Supercharger stalls each month in North America alone,” de Zegher, Director of Charging for North America, said.

Tesla had 54,892 supercharger connectors around the globe as of the end of 2023. By the end of 2024, this rose by 19% to 65,495 connectors.
