Trump administration on Thursday directed states to not spend the federal funds allocated as part of an initiative introduced by the previous administration to expand EV charging infrastructure in the country.
What Happened: The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure or NEVI program is a $5 billion initiative to increase EV charging infrastructure on highways.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) said in a letter addressed to State Department of Transportation Directors on Thursday that the new leadership of the Department of Transportation has decided to review the policies underlying implementation of the NEVI program and all previous guidance regarding it are rescinded.
"Effective immediately, no new obligations may occur under the NEVI Formula Program until the updated final NEVI Formula Program Guidance is issued and new State plans are submitted and approved," Emily Biondi, FHWA's associate administrator for planning, environment, and realty, wrote in the letter.
The updated draft of the program will be published for public comment in the spring, the letter said, following which the final guidance will be published. States will be able to resubmit their implementation plans under the program after that.
According to the letter, states will be able to get “reimbursement of existing obligations” until the new guidance is issued in order to “not disrupt current financial commitments.”
Why It Matters: 56 charging stations have been built thus far under the program, according to the NEVI Awards Dashboard.
Trump, during his Presidential campaign, said that he would end what he termed Biden’s “EV mandate.” On his first day, he paused the disbursement of funds under the NEVI program.
The President has previously also said that he would remove EV benefits such as the $7500 consumer tax credit on the purchase of EVs.
