Stocks climb on banking reform, China growth

Stocks extend rally after regulators approve banking reform; China continues growth

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are extending their rally into a third week as investors are sending bank stocks higher following new global regulatory requirements and signs that China's economy continues its robust growth.

A round of corporate dealmaking is also giving stocks a lift. Hewlett-Packard is purchasing security software provider ArcSight. Dollar Thrifty has accepted Hertz's acquisition offer.

Global regulators have agreed to reforms that could help avoid another credit crisis that plagued financial markets worldwide in 2008 and early 2009.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 65, or 0.6 percent, at 10,528. The S&P 500 is up 11, or 1 percent, at 1,120, while the Nasdaq composite is up 36, or 1.6 percent, at 2,279.
