CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Tribune Publishing today unveiled a mobile app for the Chicago Tribune, the first in a suite of new mobile apps for the Company's major media brands. The Chicago Tribune app is available for immediate download today in the Apple Store® and Google Play™ Store. The other seven flagship Tribune Publishing brands are expected to introduce custom apps by year's end.

The apps emphasize customization, allowing users to create a highly personalized content feed where they can prioritize and follow topics of most interest to them. This unique experience gives users access to comprehensive storytelling – including news about specific communities, a specific sports team, breaking news, entertainment and more. In addition, the apps will provide a consistent platform for marketers to launch premium ads.

“The new apps represent a fundamental re-thinking of the mobile experience for our audience and for our advertising partners,” said Bill Adee, Executive Vice President of Digital for Tribune Publishing. “Our audience will be able to get the content they want, on their terms, on the screens that matter most to them, while our marketing partners can benefit from premium ad placements that render seamlessly across platforms.”

Key user features of the new apps will include:

  • Follow Topics, a unique, personalized feed that allows readers to discover topics and communities that interest them;
  • Browse Your Way, which lets tablet users choose from two different experiences, one meant for browsing and one meant for deep diving, simply by rotating the device;
  • See Your Progress, a visual indicator that greys out articles that users have read, lending a sense of accomplishment for readers; and
  • Save for Later, a custom reading list that saves articles for later reading.

The apps build upon the award-winning desktop and mobile-web experience introduced earlier this year to critical acclaim.
