App Store, Apple Music And Other Apple Services Experiencing Problems Ahead Of Earnings

A number of Apple Inc. AAPL services are experiencing problems this afternoon. According to the company's system status page, iTunes and Apple Music are among the afflicted services. The full list includes:
  • App Store
  • Apple Music
  • Apple TV
  • iBooks Store
  • iTunes in the Cloud
  • uTunes Match
  • iTunes Store
  • iTunes U
  • Mac App Store
  • OS X Software Update
  • Radio
  • Volume Purchase Program
Apple expert Sean Udall told Benzinga that it is a "funny coincidence" that the outages occurred on the same day Apple is scheduled to report its fiscal 2015 third quarter results. Apple's system status page indicates that the outages began just before 10:00 a.m. ET. "I don't even really pay attention to stuff like that," Udall, who serves as the CIO of Quantum Trading Strategies and is the author of The TechStrat Report, told Benzinga. "Let's say something like an Etsy or maybe Zulily, maybe Priceline a decade ago -- if you had some kind of weird outage on a critical day, that could be a bad thing and that could be something that actually hurts revenue."

Udall said today's issues shouldn't hurt Apple at all. He isn't concerned that this outage is the result of a hack but said that Apple (like most companies) is likely fighting attacks from hackers every single day. "I would bet Apple has been attacked by hackers just like any company has," said Udall. "Would it be bad enough or serious enough that hundreds of iTunes account data has been stolen? We'll see. My guess is every company is being or has been [enduring attacks] on a daily, if not hourly, basis." Many corporations have been focused on developing a proper response when their systems are compromised, but Udall said it is important to have a series of preventions in place as well. He thinks Apple is as good as any company (if not better) at preventing attacks. Disclosure: At the time of this writing, Louis Bedigian had no position in the equities mentioned in this report.
